Those exposed to mass trauma are at significant risk for developing medical and/or psychiatric problems. Such problems may continue months or years after the event that initiated them. In an effort to mitigate such effects in DOD workers affected by the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks, the Army surgeon general formed "Operation Solace" to care for those directly involved, Family members of those lost, and others in the military system who indicated that they were affected by the tragedy.

Operation Solace is staffed by military behavioral health specialists such as psychiatrists, psychologists and social workers.

This program continues to provide support services to DOD community members impacted by stress related to trauma, terrorism and war.
