Spiritual Attitude Inventory (2007)

About AMEDD - AMEDD Innovations Since Desert Storm

Current research indicates that spirituality has a positive impact on both mental and physical health. The Spiritual Attitude Inventory was designed specifically for Soldiers, to assess their spiritual well-being. It was developed by the U.S. Army Center for Health Promotion and Preventive Medicine in consultation with Dr. Harold Koenig at the Duke University Center for Spirituality, Theology and Health.

The SAI can be used to assess changes in spirituality over time (for example, pre- and post-deployment) or as a clinical tool to facilitate a discussion about spirituality (for example, to enhance resiliency and coping resources in a counseling setting).

In testing, the SAI proved to be both reliable and valid. It is currently being publicized in professional literature to facilitate its use by Army health professionals and chaplains.
