Ongoing Research & Use of Telemedicine (1996)

About AMEDD - AMEDD Innovations Since Desert Storm

Use of telemedicine

Telemedicine is the back-and-forth exchange of medical information using telecommunications and information technology: computer, voice, video, digital still images, sound and other data formats. It allows healthcare providers to consult quickly and across distances on matters of patient diagnosis and treatment. It is used in some Army medical treatment facilities and in deployments.

If used effectively, telemedicine can reduce requirements for far-forward battlefield specialty care and potentially reduce the need for evacuations, allowing patients to be returned to their units more quickly. The Army Medical Department is currently using telemedicine in its deployments for consultation in radiology, ophthalmology, dermatology, mental health and pathology.
