Brigadier General David J. Bishop

Assistant Surgeon General of Warrior Care and Transition and
Commander of the Warrior Transition Command

Brig. Gen. David J. Bishop is the commander of the United States Army Warrior Transition Command and Assistant Surgeon General for Warrior Care and Transition.  Prior to taking command, he was the Chief of Staff for Third Army/United States Army Central.  Brig. Gen. Bishop received his bachelor's degree in international affairs upon graduating from the United States Air Force Academy in 1984.  He later earned a master's degree in administration from Central Michigan University.  He is also a graduate of the U.S. Army Command and General Staff College and the U.S. Army War College.

Brig. Gen. Bishop first served as a tank platoon leader and tank company executive officer with the 3rd Battalion, 69th Armor at Fort Stewart, Ga., 1984 to 1987.  After graduating from the Armor Officer Advanced Course, he served as battalion S-1 and commander of C Company, 1st Battalion, 35th Armor in Erlangen, Germany.  He deployed to Operation Desert Shield and Desert Storm as the assistant S-3, 2nd Brigade, 1st Armored Division and remained in Saudi Arabia as Commander of Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 1st Armored Division (Port Support Activity).  Upon redeployment to Germany, he commanded HHC, 4th Battalion, 70th Armor, in Erlangen, Germany.  As a major he served as Battalion S-3 and Battalion Executive Officer, 2nd Battalion, 69th Armor, 3rd Brigade, 3rd Infantry Division at Fort Benning, Ga.  From 2000 to 2002, he commanded the 3rd Battalion, 69th Armor, at Fort Stewart, Ga. and deployed the battalion to Kosovo in support of Operation Joint Guardian.  Brig. Gen. Bishop later commanded the 3rd Brigade, 1st Armored Division, at Fort Riley, Ks. from 2004 through 2006 and deployed the Brigade to Operation Iraqi Freedom.

Other assignments include: Armor Branch assignment officer; aide de camp to the Vice Chief of Staff and later to the Chief of Staff of the Army.  Brig. Gen. Bishop also served in J-5 Policy and Strategy Division, U.S. Forces Korea; as Chief, Studies, Analysis and Gaming Division, J-8, The Joint Staff; and as Director, Rapid Equipping Force.

His military decorations include the Distinguished Service Medal, Defense Superior Service Medal, Legion of Merit (with Oak Leaf Cluster), Bronze Star Medal (with Oak Leaf Cluster), Defense Meritorious Service Medal, Meritorious Service Medal (with 4 Oak Leaf Clusters), Joint Service Commendation Medal, Army Commendation Medal, Joint Service Achievement Medal, Army Achievement Medal (with 2 Oak Leaf Clusters), Combat Action Badge, Parachutist Badge, Joint Chiefs of Staff Identification Badge, and the Army Staff Identification Badge.
